How can you tell when an apple is going bad?

A melon should be firm to the touch. You should be able to press firmly at the end and it might just give a little. If it is soft it might be just over-ripe, but if it is too soft, or has mold on it, then that's the sign that the melon has gone bad.

You can generally tell the quality of an apple from its feel and appearance.

• If it is looking dull and shriveled or has sunken areas, bruises or spots of mold, then it is not good.
• If you heft it and it heavy for its size, that means it should be juicy.
• If the apple feels hard and doesn't yield under light fingertip pressure, that should mean it is crisp.

The outside of it (the rind) will be very squishy and moist, it might even turn a darker bruised color. The inside of the lemon, depending on how far along the rotting is, will start to turn brown as well.
