If you want onions with a bulb plant them shallow, you want to see the top of the onion set showing a little bit.

If you want skinny green onions then plant them deeper, about an inch and a half.

Onions usually aren't planted from seeds but from sets. Onions have a multi year life cycle and won't make an edible bulb from seed right away.

However, in the major onion growing areas of the US, onions typically are planted from seed. In these areas, the seed is generally planted about 3/4 inch to one inch (two to 2.5 cm) deep in the soil. usually just dig a hole probably a foot long put the seed in and grow it. basically don't place it to close to the earths surface. and make sure it gets lots of sun too.
