How did Prophet Muhammad become a prophet?

Muhammad became a prophet by God's revelation of the holy Quran, the Muslim Holy Book, to him through the Angel Gabriel (Jibril) that started in year 610 AD through the year 632 AD (year of death of prophet Muhammad PBUH).

For years after his marriage, Muhammad had been accustomed to secluding himself in a cave in Mount Hira, a few miles from Mecca. To this cave he used to go for prayer and meditation, sometimes alone and sometime with his family. There, he often spent the whole nights in deep thought and profound communion with the Unseen yet All-Knowing Allah of the Universe. It was during one of those retirements, in year 610 AD, and in the still hours of the night, when no human sympathy was near, that Angel Gabriel (Jibril) came to him to tell him that he was the Messenger of Allah sent to reclaim a fallen people to the knowledge and service of their Lord. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) then started receiving God Quran revelation to him, through the Angel Gabriel, from year 610 AD until year 632 AD (year of prophet's death).

Mohamed (pbuh) became a prophet when the angel Gabriel gave him revelation. The revelelation was that he should make people have peace and to stop slavery. He had to get people to stop worshipping idols and to worship only one God.

Muhammad used to take time out for spiritual reflection by spending time alone in a cave on Mount Hira, just outside Makkah. He was there during the month of Ramadan in 610 CE when he became aware of a presence and voice which urged him to read or recite some words. Muhammad, like many others at the time, could not read, so he shouted 'I cannot'. He felt himself being squeezed again but this time, when he realised, the voice commanded him to recite the words now found in the Qur'an. Muhammad repeated the words and then left the cave in terror. He had seen no one but felt as though the words he heard were burned into him. Then an angel appeared and the same voice he heard in the cave told him 'You are the Messenger of God, and I am Jibril.'

Muhammad fled home to his wife, frightened and confused. He needed Khadijah to reasure him that he was not mad. She comforted him and the next day went to see her christian cousin. When he heard Muhammad's story, he knew what had appeared to him and had also appeared to the earlier prophets and that Muhammad had been chosen by God.

Prophet Muhammad has become a prophet since God revelation of the first verses of Quran to him through the Angel Gabriel while he was meditating in a mount cave called Hiraa in Mecca in the present country Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This was in year 610 AD (when the prophet was 40 years old).
