Building a waterer is often more trouble than buying a one or five gallon plastic waterer for about 5 dollars.
What you need is a plastic milk jug or a 5 gal. pail and a shallow plastic dish. The sides of the dish must be taller than the small hole you put in the side of the jug. The jug must have a sealable cap.
Place the jug into the dish, at a point lower than the sides of the dish drill very small holes in the side of the jug. This will allow water to drain out. As the water drains it will fill the dish to the level of the hole and stop. Each time a chicken or animal drinks the water will be automatically replaced by the contents of the jug. This will only work if the jug is sealed at the top and the holes are lower than the side of the dish it sits in. (Boyle's Law)
See the link below for a picture of what the above waterer looks like.
Another type of easy to build chicken waterer uses chicken nipples (see link below.)?These devices have been used on commercial chicken farms for years, but backyard chicken keepers are just starting to understand their utility.? The nipples keep the chickens from ever coming in contact with the water (other than drinking it) so you never end up with poop in the water.
Chicken waterers work by using a gravity-fed system to keep a constant supply of water available to poultry. The water is stored in a container above the drinking area, and as the chickens drink, more water flows down to replace what has been consumed. This ensures that the chickens always have access to fresh water.
