How do you hatch chicken eggs without an incubator or the actual chicken itself?

It will be difficult, if not impossible. You, not being a mommy critter of that species, are not equipped to do that. The very best thing you can do is return the egg to its nest. Don't worry, all the urban legends about birds being able to smell are just that -- urban legends. Very few birds actually have a sense of smell. Simply put the egg back into the nest as soon as possible, then LEAVE. It's VERY important you don't sit around watching because the parents won't return to the nest site. But they will return!

Also keep in mind that sometimes parent birds will push eggs out of the nest that are infertileand will not hatch. So if you hear baby birds chirping from the nest, chances are that egg is a dud and no amount of mothering on your part will change it.

In short, the best bet for the egg is to give it back to its parents -- or take it to a professional such as a vet or wildlife rehabilitator. In many states it's actually illegal for non-qualified people to possess any wildlife even if they're injured.

I wanted to add that sometimes the eggs are fertile, but the chick will die before hatching or during hatching and the parents will toss it out of the nest. If this is suspected to be the case, check to see if the egg is warm before placing it back into the nest. If it is cold, it will just be thrown out again. It may be good to move it farther away from the nest to avoid attracting predators, especially for ground nesters (or see if you can remove the egg from the area legally).
