keeping it in an air tight container will work the longest but if it gets dried out, take a clean paper towel, soak it with water (not dripping wet) and lay it on top of the dried out brown sugar and reseal the container. The sugar will absorb the moisture from the wet/damp paper towel and be good as new. Michelle from Newark
Another option if the sugar is already soft and you just want to keep it that way, is to put a piece of bread in with the sugar (it works even in original plastic bag). The moisture in the bread keeps the sugar soft and seems to work longer then a damp paper towel (in my opinion). The bread gets really hard and dried out and does not spoil.
Brown sugar does not expire, but it can harden over time. To prevent this, store it in an airtight container.
Brown sugar can last indefinitely if stored properly in an airtight container to prevent it from hardening.
Store it in cool area in a moisture-proof container.
Brown sugar can become hard due to exposure to air, which causes it to lose moisture and become dry. This can happen if the sugar is not stored properly in an airtight container.
At your local grocery store, it may be labelled as Demerara Sugar.

Brownulated sugar is a free-flowing granulated sugar with added molasses, while regular brown sugar is a moist sugar with molasses mixed in. Brownulated sugar is easier to measure and store, while regular brown sugar is stickier and better for baking.

Brown sugar can technically last indefinitely if stored properly in an airtight container to prevent moisture absorption. However, it can harden over time due to moisture loss. To check if brown sugar has expired, look for signs of mold, an off smell, or an unusual texture. If any of these are present, it's best to discard the brown sugar to avoid any potential health risks.
