How do you separate the fish eggs from the fish?

Once the fry are free swimming and feeding well, you will see the male litterally dashing around collecting and spitting the fry back into the nest only to have them swimm back out again. Then is the time to move him before he looses the plot and eats them in frustration.

Different species behave differently. In some cases the male or female is left with the ova/young. In others both parents are needed to care for them and in still other species both parents need to be removed before they eat the ova.

If you are planning on raising your own fry (baby fish), then you would need to remove the eggs from your tank and place them in a shallow dish with tank water. Raising your own fry is a lot of work which includes culling any unfertilized eggs daily, culling any baby fish that are defective, changing the water every day, proper feeding, and so on.

Usually it's best to just let the fish in your tank eat the eggs, and any that are left over after a day should be cleaned out.
