If you can seal the container tightly, you can still store it in a cupboard for quite a while. Unfortunately, since the extract is usually quite volatile, you might be better off refrigerating it after opening it. Once opened, the vanilla will start to be oxidized by the air that gets into the container, so you can't store it indefinitely. Most people will use it up - or it will evaporate - before the degradation from oxidation causes enough damage to ruin the extract.
