When a blood test is needed from a chicken or other poultry bird, wing vein bleeding is the preferred method. Generally this is the procedure:

  • Bird is laid on its back.
  • Chosen wing is opened and pulled toward collector.
  • Find wing vein between biceps & triceps muscles.
  • Pluck small feathers that may be in the way
  • Clean area with 70% alcohol
  • Insert needle & draw blood.
  • Remove needle, apply pressure to the site momentarily.
  • Another method is to cut the vein allowing the blood to flow into the tube.

Total rbc means what?

Total RBC (red blood cell) count refers to the number of red blood cells in a specific volume of blood, typically measured in millions of cells per microliter. This count is an important indicator of a person's overall health and can help diagnose conditions like anemia, dehydration, or blood disorders. Abnormal RBC counts can signal various medical issues that may require further investigation.

What prediction can you make with rbc's and wbc's?

If rbc stands for red blood count and wbc stands for white blood count, then you may be able to predict if someone is becoming anemic.

What is the formula to calculate red blood cells?

The formula to calculate red blood cells is: Total Red Blood Cells (RBC) = Red blood cell count (RBC count) in millions per microliter (mcL) x Volume of blood in milliliters (mL).

What is the long term effect of athletic training on RBC count?

The more we use our skeletal muscles, the more oxygen they need. This causes an increase in rbc count because rbcs carry the oxygen. If an athlete trains at high altitude, the rbc count will increase even more because the body compensates for the lower oxygen level at high altitude by increasing rbc count even more. This is sometimes referred to as 'packing'.

How do you calculate mcv?

Yes you can, but as always you need some other points to make the calculation ie HCT(hematocrit) and your RBC(red blood count) MCV=HCT%*10 / RBC count (millions/mm3)
