As long as sugar is kept dry and sealed away from the elements and insects, sugar can last nearly indefinitely. As a matter of fact, it has been used as a food preservative in candies and pickles.

Had three rubbermaids of candied fruit (cherries and pineapple) in the fridge since last year at this time. All seems to taste OK, haven't fallen over dead from some mysterious ailment yet. Going to use it in some fruitcake(!) later today.
