There are two wings, two legs, two thighs, and two breasts so, as a general rule, there are considered to be eight pieces in a chicken.

Occasionally the back can be included as a piece and so can the neck, in which case you could have up to ten pieces but this is not normally so.

Depending on how you want to cook and serve your chicken, you might find it better to cut through each breast and leave part of it attached to each wing, which will make each individual portion a slightly more equal size.
