It depends on the hamster really but I have 3 Russian dwarf campbells and two of them are so active during the early and late hours that they can spend all day sleeping and only wake up for a drink or a little food.
The third lives on his own because he doen't get on with others and he can sleep for hours and hours and hours and only tends to come out late a night for a short time compared to the others.
