It all depends on the size of your onions. The world's heaviest onion was 16lb, 8½oz. 3-4 large onions would weigh about about a pound.

Onions come in many sizes. I just went and weighed some small and some large that I have in. There can be anything from 8 small to two large sweet onions in a pound. You 24 could be 3 pounds if small, or 12 pounds if large.

The web references vary and show medium onions as 3/4 to 1 cup chopped and large onions as 1 to 1.5 cups chopped.
About 3 or 4 yellow onions, depending on your opinion of "medium".
