That depends on the breed of chicken. Most are big enough that 1 inch hex chicken wire - poultry mesh- will hold them. But some of the smaller bantams like Seramas or d'uccles will walk right through without even slowing down. Though I don't normally raise bantams, my pens are all 1/2 inch hardware mesh along the bottoms so that guinea keets and bantam chicks can't get out and hurt themselves.
