Most cichlids are quite large fish that put out heaps of ammonia. That means they need very regular and fairly large water changes. As you probably know, one well grown Amazonian Cichlid needs at least 10 gallons and a couple should be in at least a 30 gallon tank. Obviously you know that every tank needs a permanently running cycled filter, and every tank needs to have at least 50% of its water replaced every week. If you follow the above basics your fish stand a chance of living a reasonable life span. If you fail in any of them I can guarantee that you will have constant recurring heath problems with your fish.

Can a firemouth meeki go in a saltwater tank?

No, a firemouth cichlid (Meek's cichlid) cannot thrive in a saltwater tank. They are freshwater fish that require specific water conditions, including low salinity. Placing them in a saltwater environment can lead to stress, health issues, and ultimately death. It's best to keep them in a properly maintained freshwater aquarium.

Salt in a cichlid aquarium?

Salt can be beneficial in a cichlid aquarium as it can help with stress reduction, promote gill function, and prevent certain diseases. However, it's important to use it judiciously, as not all cichlid species tolerate salt well. Generally, aquarium salt should be added in moderation, and it's best to research the specific needs of your cichlid species before adding it to the tank. Always monitor water parameters and the health of your fish when introducing any additives.

How many African cichlid can you put in a 10 gal tank?

None, you need at least 55 gallonsANS2:A 55-gallon tank would be nice but, you can keep cichlids in a small bowl. The rule of thumb is to not put any more fish in the tank than 1 inch of fish per gallon. Since cichlids like warm water, and since warm water does not hold oxygen as well as cooler water, you will want to reduce the number of fish that you put into a tall tank since there will be less surface area for the water to breathe. Also, you will have better results if your tank has good aeration. When you change water in the tank, avoid changing out more than 10% at a time because the growth of the fish will remain stunted by the buildup of hormones that they secrete into the water. If you change too frequently, the fish will outgrow the tank.
