It doesn't really matter since flies almost never have trouble finding food sources. If the fly is in a controlled environment and you want them kept alive it's as simple as leaving some sugarwater within their reach and refilling it once and awhile.
However, if you leave festering foods they might re-populate quickly and you won't need to worry about how often they need to eat. Their life cycle will repeat before they have a chance to starve.
Try finding an entomologist and contacting them personally if you're really that interested, I only know enough to keep my cupboards pest free.
