Credit for the invention of the first practical electric toaster goes to Charles P. Strite of Stillwater, Minnesota. It's said that Strite had grown tired of the smell (and most certainly the taste!) of burnt toast in the company cafeteria, so he set out to fix the problem.
Strite was granted US Patent 1394450 on October 18, 1921 for his invention. Interestingly enough, his simple savior was nearly unsuccessful until the invention of sliced bread a few years later made toasting with Strite's device a truly practical endeavor.

No, it was invented in Belgium. And there were dishes similar to it in ancient times. Since the French buy their bread fresh daily, they do have "pain perdu" or French toast to use the bread which otherwise they would not eat.
It depends, how much toast do you have.... It also depends on how many toast your toaster can toast.
