Apparently to some scientists that bacon could stop you from preventing a heart attack.
The terms “bacon and eggs” and “heart healthy” don’t normally go hand-in-hand. However, with just a few simple modifications, this favorite greasy-spoon recipe can be easily fit into a heart-healthy (yet still delicious) diet. 1) Choose eggs substitutes or egg whites instead of whole eggs. Since most of the fat and cholesterol is in the egg’s yolk, an egg white is an easy, healthy substitute. If you miss the “look” of a traditional egg, egg substitutes are a fat-free alternative. (Heart-healthy tip: Be sure to use a non-stick pan or a non-stick spray. Butter and oil adds unnecessary fat and calories.) 2) Bulk up your eggs with vegetables. Adding veggies to your eggs not only helps reach your daily recommended vegetable servings, but makes your meal just that much heartier. Spinach, tomatoes, peppers, and asparagus go great with eggs. 3) With more than five grams of heart –clogging fat, bacon is a “no-no” on most heart-healthy diets. However, turkey bacon can be used as an alternative. Many of the brands currently on the market taste just like the real thing. (Here is an extra heart-healthy tip – grill your turkey bacon instead of frying it. This method reduces the amount of fat you will consume.) 4) Like to eat your bacon and eggs in a sandwich? Toss the white bread and choose a whole-wheat or whole-grain variety. In addition to slashing calories, you will be adding some extra fiber into your heart-healthy diet. (Heart-healthy tip: If you want a spread on your bread, choose a light butter or margarine to lessen the fat grams.) 5) Wash it all down with a heart-healthy drink. Orange juice (with pulp) is a great choice. In addition to getting one of your daily recommended fruit servings, the pulp will add a few extra grams of fiber into your diet. As you can see, a few simple modifications can change a heart-healthy “don’t” into a heart-healthy “do”.
