Orville Redenbacher (1909-1995) was an actual person, not an actor. He graduated from Purdue University in 1928 and spent his most of life in the agricultural field in and around Valparaiso, Indiana. He and businessman Charles Bowman (1919-2009) developed a hybrid popping corn that was widely marketed beginning in 1970. Redenbacher was famously the spokesman for the brand, which became part of the ConAgra conglomerate in 1990.
