I've read several places people saying it is OK, but my vet told me no. Some hamsters have adverse reactions to cheese and become very ill. Others will get diarrhea from it. I've had a hamster with diarrhea and it was not a pretty sight. Also foods that are solid, but become mushy with body heat can be a large problem if the little guy decides he wants to stuff it in his pouch for later.
There are a ton of other treats you can give him to keep him happy though. Small chunks of apple, fresh basil, carrots, celery, non sugary cereals, grapes, green beans, Pears, squash, and sweet potato are just a few ideas.
