In summary: The main idea is to define the essential behavior in question and start with this premise. If this behavior is morally permissible for me to do for the reason that I aim to do it then it must be morally permissible everyone to do this behavior for the same reason.
The questions then present, does this behavior lead to a contradiction (as in stealing for personal gain leads to ownership becoming meaningless and thereby also the act of stealing) and would you think the world resulting from the widespread practice of this behavior good?
And this is only one of many ways to look at ethics. Never let someone else determine your ethics for you. You can learn a great deal from others but ultimately you are the one who must live with the person you decide to become.
It is your own opinion to this question but my opinion is no, it is not ethical to eat meat. Animals are living things and killing them for our own purposes is not ethical. Without meat we can survive.
