A healthy bovine can reproduce at 4 months of age, but in this industry heifers are either put out with the bull or inseminated at about 18months old. At least that's what we do :o)

A cow would be liable to breed for until she's over 20 years of age. On average, a cow is expected to have a breeding span of 10 to 15 years. How much does a holstein cow weigh in lactation?

It depends in the breed! If you are talking about dairy cows the average Holstein Cow weights 1,300lbs give or take a couple hundred pounds. But that is for a mature cow. Dairy cows usually have their first calf at about 2 years old and not considered mature until they are about 5 or 6 years old!!! Cows only start producing milk when they have their first calf. Holsteins are the most common dairy cows in the world and the biggest and largest of the dairy cows. Jerseys are much smaller for example!

How old is the average cow when it dies?

The average lifespan of a cow varies depending on its breed and purpose, but most cows live between 15 to 20 years. Dairy cows may have a shorter lifespan due to the demands of milk production, often living around 5 to 7 years in commercial settings. Beef cattle typically live longer, but they are usually slaughtered at a younger age for meat. Overall, many cows do not reach their full potential lifespan due to farming practices.

Why is the ability to clone cattle embryos so useful?

Mainly to copy a very high producing animal that is too old to breed or unable to breed. This is a very costly procedure, however, the end results will balance out.
