Eggs are released from the ovaries during ovulation, which typically occurs around the midpoint of a woman's menstrual cycle, approximately 14 days before the start of her next period. Once released, the egg travels through the fallopian tube, where it can be fertilized by sperm. If fertilization occurs, the fertilized egg (now a zygote) implants itself in the uterine lining about 6 to 10 days after ovulation. Thus, the implantation in the womb usually occurs around day 20 to 24 of a typical 28-day cycle.
