What are basic needs for a goldfish?

Goldfish are a coldwater fish. They thrive in cooler water. So there is no need for a heater in most cases.

First you must start with dechlorinated water. Some aquarium salt. Simple goldfish food. Goldfish like vegataion some freshwater plants couldn't hurt. Goldfish are very simple and easy to keep. Just don't overfeed. It all depends on the size of you aqaurium, bowl, or pond.

If you want to take good care of your goldfish well, I suggest these supplies you should buy for your goldfish: * Aquarium- minimum of 20 gallons for 1st fish +10gallons for every additional fish (remember goldfish grow very large and need plenty of space to swim) * Filter - canister filters work well at keeping a goldfish tank sparkling clean * AirPump - a big aquarium needs a bigger air pump * Gravel and Rocks - use about 1/4 inch-1inch of gravel,only use more if you plan to use live plants in your aquarium * Live Plants - gives off oxygen- though it can produce a lot of nitrite if it is not well kept, also be aware that goldfish love to eat live plants * Fake Plants - this way you don't to have worry about keeping it alive * Wood - this is optional (bogwood works well) * Food - a fortified goldfish flake or pellet food.
