Broilers are raised to produce meat. Typically a broiler is fed a diet high in calories to quickly bring it to market weight. The younger the bird at optimum weight the more tender the meat. Layers are raised to lay eggs and are not usually slaughtered until after they have reached the end of their productive egg laying years. The diet of a laying hen is less high in fat and usually higher in calcium and vitamins for good oviduct development.
