What are some foods that are only in the Midwest?

I can think of one: kringle. This is a Danish pastry very popular in Racine, WI, where a lot of Danish settlers made their home in the 1800's. All the local bakeries make it and ship it all over the country.

From an agricultural standpoint, the Midwest* is famous for corn production, as well as beef. Some other staple crops in the Midwest include sorghum, soybeans, barley, cherries, and beets.

From a culinary standpoint, certain cities in the Midwest serve local foods that have become commonly associated with the cities themselves. For example:

• Chicago--deep-dish pizza, barbecued ribs
• Milwaukee--beer, bratwurst
• Minneapolis--lutefisk, lefse (from Norwegian immigrants)
• Cincinnati--chili seasoned with cocoa powder and served over spaghetti
• St. Louis--fried ravioli with marinara sauce
• Kansas City--barbecued beef and pork

*I am defining the Midwest more broadly than is traditional, to include Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, Kentucky, and Missouri.

In addition to corn, pigs, and beef, the midwest is is famous for dairy products. Many farmers grow cash crops such as peas, beans, ginger, mustard, apples, and peaches. Potatoes are grown in northern Wisconsin. Michigan is famous for its fruits, especially apples and cherries. Companies such as Frito Lay, Green Giant, Sargento are here. Chicago was big in making candy because of the corn and the railroads to ship the candy elsewhere. Michigan is where Kelloggs, Post, and General Mills make their cereal.
