A crab has three main parts on its body: * carapace - the main part of the body consisting of a hard shell * thorax - consisting of its head and the middle part of the body * cephalothorax - that part which joins the head and the middle section together. Other main crab body parts are leg parts unique to crabs - the front two legs of the crab, nearest the head, are called chelipeds and are sometimes used for walking but mostly for eating. The claw on the cheliped is called chela, and these are used to grasp or hold something. If a crab loses its claw, a new one will grow.
The shell or exsoskeleton
primarily for the protection of the crab, and as a defence to predators. however, if the crab has moulted recently, the new shell will be very soft, placing the crab in a highly vulnerable situation.
