Maybe cherries soaked in Rum? Madinade Cherry's in Rum. The longer the better. Takes time to make, but good to have on hand if you like it. I make a treat called Pudding Shots made with Cafe Patrone Tequlla at Fun Recipe Blog.com. Would make a great layer in a Black Frost cake too. Maybe soak a layer with a little Patron also.

I believe you can substitute the juice of maraschino cherries or cherry syrup for kirsch. Probably the same amount for what it calls for in the recipe would work fine.

You can pretty much exchange any liqueur for any other. But naturally the flavor will be changed dramatically. Instead of cherry, you'll have an almond flavor.
