There are many ways to kill a Betta. The most common cause of death in Bettas however is owner ignorance caused by pet shops giving wrong and misleading information and then supplying a tiny little container that has no filter, heating, or sufficient oxygen to support life. Bettas will not do well in a tank any smaller than 5 gallons nominal.
If I tell you what a Betta NEEDS to live, then maybe you can work out what killed it. Bettas need a minimum of a 3 gallon tank with a heater/thermostat (set at 78F) and a filter working full time, a top cover and some live plants planted in gravel and a light so that the plants will grow. They also need to have at least 50% of their water changed weekly. Bettas should be fed at least morning and evening as much as they will eat in 15 minutes. If your Betta was missing out on any or all of the above requirements then that is probably why the fish died.
stress?
