In a recent (Jan 2011) news story about a flap over the chain's illegal use of the word "maple" in their Fruit & Maple Oatmeal, the reporter said there are 28 McDonald's stores in Vermont. I can count only 25: Barre (1) Bennington (1) Berlin (1) Brandon (1) Brattleboro (1) Colchester (2) Derby (1) Enosburg Falls (1) Essex Junction (1) Fair Haven (1) Lyndonville (1) Manchester (1) Middlebury (1) Morrisville (1) Randolph (1) Rutland (2) St. Albans (1) St. Johnsbury (1) South Burlington (2) Springfield (1) Swanton (1) White River Junction (1) Notes: 1:For several years, there was a McDonald's in downtown Burlington (walk-in only, no drive-thru or even parking), but that location closed a couple of years ago. Vermont was already the only state without a McDonald's in its capital city (Montpelier); now its largest city doesn't have one, either. 2:By state law, the word "maple" cannot be used to describe a product unless that product contains either real maple syrup or sugar. The original "maple" flavoring of the oatmeal (still being used everywhere but Vermont) is derived from the bark of a bush distantly related to the sugar maple tree. Vermont took issue with McDonald's use of the word, and now Vermont stores offer maple sugar "upon request."
