in New Orleans there was a much larger staff and a much larger menu, though most of the dishes were various combinations of sauces and toppings (crab, etc) on the same handful of grilled and fried meats, fish etc.

I left this answer because it does give some information. While smoking was done in the 20s, this is done from a modern point of view, of which they didn't have back then. Smoking was the social norm and for one to of said this back then would have been gauche and rude and the poster would have not been allowed to stay.

Restaurants varied. All of them were much more formal then anything we have today, food generally was not as varied and you had different types of establishments. Some were meals in a cafeteria style, diner and formal events. Children didn't go often and dining out was exceptionally rare. The movies show a very small part of it, and even then that was nightlife, not dining.

Think a formal Waffle House for the average Joe.
