Viable or fertilized eggs look no different on the outside than any other egg. It is what is going on inside that makes them different. Candling the egg is the only way to know for sure if changes are happening inside. When you shine a light into an infertile egg you see no shadows, dark area's or spots. An egg undergoing changes will have dark spots or a dark mass inside.
