In 19th Century America, a Cake Walk was a dance contest, also called a Prize Walk. These contests generally were staged to raise money for some cause or charity. At the end of the event, the winning couple received a cake as their prize.
Second prize in a stargazer's contest could be called a "runner-up award" or "honorable mention." It recognizes the achievement of the contestant who placed second in the competition.
