It depends really, in clean tanks and with proper feeding it can live years. If you forget about it then it won't last very long. But an average goldfish will not live past at the most of 2.5 years of age. If you have more than one goldfish it varies because one might eat the other(s).

Provided the fish is properly kept and all the basic requirements are supplied a goldfish can live for more than 20 years or so. The basic rules are. :- 1 inch of fish needs a minimum of 1 gallon of water.(3 gallons is much better) :- Every tank needs a permanently running cycled filter. :- Every tank needs at least 50% of its water changed every week. Keep the above rules and your fish stand a chance. Fail in any of them and I can guarantee that you will have constant health problems with your fish.
