Boobies were apparently given their common name because of their folly in allowing sailors to approach and kill them for food. Like gannets, boobies plunge-dive for fish and squid but specialize in feeding in shallow water and in the catching of flyingfish. The brown booby stays nearer the coast than the gannet and breeds on cliffs and rocks or even on beaches and coral reefs. The female lays 1 or 2 eggs in a hollow on the ground or among rocks, and both parents share the incubation and feeding duties.
Brown Booby was created in 1783.
