Labrador retrievers do well on almost any high-quality canine diet. In general, I would avoid grocery store and large-chain dog foods, however, and if you can afford it try to get your food from a specialty pet supply store. The food you buy should NOT have the following words in the ingredients, if possible: wheat, gluten, corn, byproduct(s).

Labs tend to overeat and get fat because they have slow metabolisms, so in general you would need to feed the dog less than the dog food instructions indicate. Adjust over a couple of weeks until you see your dog maintaining a constant, healthy weight (i.e. you should be able to see a clear waist and not see but be able to feel ribs).

Labs have oily coats and skin, and they often benefit from salmon oil or flax seed oil added to their food. Consult with your veterinarian about this.
