To maintain milk production they must drop a calf almost annually. Male calves are usually turned into veal, or steers, save a few of the best for breeding. Dairy farming, like most businesses, is "bottom line" oriented. Non-producers are eliminated, producers are rewarded, just like the real, nongovernmental world.
