A lemon is a yellow, round or oval, juicy citrus fruit which grows on the evergreen tree of the same name.

It is well known for its very sour, or tart, flavor; it is also rich in vitamin C. Lemons are sometimes eaten as they are, like other citrus fruit, occasionally with sugar, like a grapefruit, but more frequently is used as a fruit juice, an ingredient in fruit drinks and cocktails, and in cooking.

Lemon slices, wedges or cheeks are frequently served with other foods as a garnish or for squeezing over foods on the plate after serving. Lemon is commonly served this way with fish, but is also a very effective accompaniment to other dishes, particularly rice dishes and curries.

Almost any savory meal, hot or cold, can benefit from a squeeze of lemon, as can many sweet dishes, but the lemon should always be served individually so diners can add it according to their taste, or not use it at all.

Lemon is also a word used to describe a yellow color, usually paler than the primary yellow pigment.

The word also is used as a term for something bad, defective, or unsatisfactory, usually goods which have been purchased: 'He thought he had a bargain, but it turned out he'd wasted his money on a lemon.'
