Firstly let's understand what the word category means. It simply means a group. When we try to organise masses of information to uderstand it better we break it into groups which have similar characteristics ... like all the people in New Zealand with red hair, or all the houses in Alabama which have chimneys ... These then are groups or categories. If we decide we want to break these groups down further ... like all the people in New Zealand who have red hair and smoke pipes, or all the houses in Alabama that have chimneys and front porches we have created sub-categories or groups within groups.
