The best bait used for opilio crab fishing is probably Squid. Cod or salmon can be used in some cases but squid is a cheaper better alternative to most all crab fisherman.
Clams, squid, and small bait fish is what I've had most of my luck with. They'll eat just about any bottom bait like crab or worms.

To use cat food as crab bait, simply place a small amount of cat food in a bait cage or trap and submerge it in the water where crabs are present. The strong scent of the cat food will attract the crabs, making it an effective bait option.
Canned catfood. Pop holes in the lid, add it to your trap. Seriously.
The most effective bait for crab fishing is typically raw chicken necks or fish heads.
Any bait that resembles a small minnow, or crab.

The best bait is Eel followed by bull lips, yes, bull lips. Crabs are very good at picking bait apart piece by piece. Eel is tough and long lasting followed by bull lips. However, you can slum with chicken necks as many "chicken neckers" from across the Bay do. Forget the sock. Crabs have eyes and will eat what they can see. They are bottom feeders.
