Koi Carp are a very close relation of the Goldfish and the method of sexing them is basically the same. In breeding condition the males develop white spots on their gill plates and pectoral fins. They are also more slender than the females who tend to become chubby around the tummy area when they are in breeding condition. Koi carp are not really for the beginner. They do get quite large (around a metre or so) so Koi should really be kept in ponds rather than tanks.
