My uncle's fiance is japanese. She told me that Sushi translates to "Special Occasion". I'm not sure if she was referring to a literal translation or if the kanji used to spell it were the actual characters for "special" and "occasion" (I'm leaning towards the latter because sushi is in fact spelled with two kanji as you can see form the link). In Japan, it is definitely not an everyday food like a burger is here... It's more comparable to a Filet Mignon or a cake (not that sushi is treated as a desert)
