any time you crack open an egg... look for the white string looking thing... that IS the umbilical cord from the baby chick. It isn't removed because it is not harmful, and is tastless, its nothing like the human one. People eat it all the time, and so do you, so don't freak when you hear this because the whole time you didnt even know... it will not kill you, or antagonize the gag reflex... don't worry.. you'll be fine...

What would cause a umbilicle cord to snap?

An umbilical cord can snap due to excessive tension or force applied to it, which may happen during labor if the baby moves suddenly or if the cord is twisted. Additionally, a weak or compromised cord structure, often due to conditions like cord abnormalities or maternal health issues, can increase the likelihood of snapping. Trauma during delivery, such as pulling on the cord too forcefully, can also contribute to this occurrence.

Why is there an umbilical cord in an egg if it is unfertilized?

You must mean that stringy white stuff beside the yolk of an egg. That's not an umbilical cord. What you see is called the chalazae. Chalazae are strong protein strands designed to hold the yolk of the egg centered in the albumen (egg white). The chalazae in a real fresh egg are quite noticeable. They shrink or disappear as the egg ages in the shell. There is no umbilical need for avians (birds) since they are ovipositors. Egg layers have no need for umbilical cords as development takes place in a separate closed environment from the mother.

How does the nutrients from the mother get to the baby?

The developing baby (the fetus) gets its nutrition and oxygen from the mother through the umbilical chord; this chord is connected to the baby in the place of the belly button, where the nutrition enters the baby's intestines so that it is absorbed into their blood. The other end is attached to the placenta; it transfers all the nutrition and oxygen the baby needs from the mother.
