  • In the absence of Roosters, the dominant (Alpha) hen will maintain a roosters duties. This includes mating the other hens, crowing, "sounding the alarm", and calling the girls to food. Sometimes, they will even develop spurs!
  • During times of molt or low amounts of food, chickens will eat their own feathers.
  • Chickens are notoriously cannibalistic. If they are not taken care of properly (enough space, enough sunlight, enough food/water, enough enrichment) then they will literally peck each other to death.
  • When pullets (hens under the age of 1 year) are getting ready to start laying, they do the "egg dance" - where they squat down and often "dance" by shuffling their feet. This is acutally a sign of submission, allowing the Rooster/Lone Alpha female to mount and mate them.
  • Maintenance of the pecking order. Sometimes, chickens will seemingly fight for nothing at all. They are quite literally "seeing who is boss".
  • Chickens will often fall over for no reason, to bask in the sun.
