However, it is said to be an acquired taste, and certainly only a fraction of Australians will eat kangaroo, or have even tried it.

There has been sone discussion though in the kangaroo meat industry about trying to introduce a specific culinary name for kangaroo meat, similar to pig meat as ham and pork, dear meat as venison, or cow meat as beef and steak. The aim of this is to avoid people having the thoughts of ¨I´m eating a cute animal¨.

In 2005 the Food Companion International magazine, with support from the Kangaroo Industry Association of Australia, ran a competition to choose a new name that wouldn´t put diners off when they saw it on a menu. The name australus was decided in December 2005.

However, the reason I stated it´s still called ¨kangaroo¨instead of australus is because the competition is not binding on the Kangaroo Industry Association, which has not moved to adopt the new name in any official capacity.

However, that doesn´t mean it never could or never will, this post could go out of date at any time. In which case when this post is out of date and if the name is officially changed, it will be to äustralus¨IF they stick with the competition results.
