Chameleons should not be kept in tanks. Mesh cages are best. These reptiles should only be kept by experienced intermediate to advanced reptile keepers, never by beginners. There are many different species of chameleons, from different environments--some require temperatures cooler than the average household, and others require temperatures in the 80s. Temperatures that are needed for a panther chameleon would kill a Jackson's chameleon, and vice versa.

Chameleons are among the most delicate of reptiles, and will quickly perish if not given exact, proper care. They have extremely short lifespans, with most species living to only 5 years, at most. Begin reptile keeping with a hardier species, such as a leopard gecko, or crested gecko.

Sometimes anole lizards are called 'American chameleons', because the green anole can change colors from green to brown. They are not related in any way to chameleons.
