Interestingly, what Bell hoped to invent was an "ear Trumpet"-- a hearing aid for his wife, who was deaf. But while she couldn't hear his new invention, which came to be known as the "telephone," other people found it very useful. The reason inventors were being asked to come up with a new communication device was this: prior to the invention of the telephone, the only way to send a message across long distances was by use of the telegraph, which was not easy to use, and required a knowledge of Morse Code.

But not many people understood Morse Code, so they had to rely on telegraphers to relay their messages. However, by the 1870s, there was growing interest in a machine that would send a message in the user's own voice, and not require learning Morse Code. Thus, Bell's telephone had some very practical uses. In its early years, the new device was welcomed mainly by journalists and by businessmen (and businesswomen). But later, as it became less expensive to make calls and more cities got telephone wires, it would be welcomed by people who just wanted to chat with friends.
