What will happen if farmers quit farming?

Many small ones have but corporations have industrialized it in developed countries so there is not apt to be a food shortage. We do get a slight increase though on anything not in season or in short supply.

If farmers quit farming, we will all starve if we cannot grow our own food to sustain ourselves. Food riots and absolute chaos will break out among people for supply of food, but eventually that will run out because no one will produce food for us anymore. Soon people will experience and face starvation like never before, and many will die.

Everyone in any developed country takes food for granted. Too often people think that food comes from some magic fairy that waves her wand and refills the grocery store shelves over night. But the reality is that people grow food for people and work very hard to do so. Only around 2 to 5 percent of the population of the United States and Canada are involved in food production, whether it's for feeding another 200 people, or for themselves plus a few others they would sell in a farmer's market or direct sales. If these few people suddenly stopped growing crops and raising animals, and the other people that are involved in supporting them also quit with their careers, the food crisis experts are saying we have now would be nothing compared to the food crisis we would have if this happens.

It honestly does not matter where this food comes from, large or small farms, corporation or sole proprietorship farming businesses, we should all be thankful that we can have the food we can get and have so many choices to purchase.

(Note: Small farms can be labelled a corporation too. Family farms can be big or small, corporate or not. Even large farms that heed to the "industrial agribusiness" label people negatively associate with so-called "Big Ag" aren't always corporations. A corporation is just a business title with the advantage of being tax exempt from things that sole proprietorship or partnerships are tax-exempt from. That's it. Just because a farm is labelled as a corporation should not mean that it is bad or evil or to be associated with greed and need for control of the market. It's just a farm with a business title, because a Farm is a Business. Farms cannot grow money on trees or produce food or raise animals for free. They need to sell their product in order to keep the farm going. And no they don't control markets. You, the consumer, do with what you choose to purchase when it's all said and done, not what you say everyone else and you should purchase.)

So, every time you sit down to eat, thank a farmer. They exist because we still need them, and will continue to exist for as long as we choose to live in a increasingly urbanizes society were most can't hunt, raise, grow or gather their own food for themselves.
