The first ice cream retail location was on the Schwamb's Mill side of the creamery. It was open in 1943 that I personally remember. We lived up near the Brackett School and rode the Hudson Bus Lines bus to do our shopping on Mass Ave. If I was 'good', my mom and I would walk from Mass Ave down Mill Street and turn left down the drive which led to Schwamb's Mill (wood moldings) and on the right side was Buttrick's Ice Cream - just 6 or 7 service windows along the wall of the creamery building. The went through some expansion after WW2 which included a place in Bedford and maybe others. Later, I think about 1952 or 53 Buttrick's built a nice snack shop next to the creamery building. It did great business for many years. When I was in high school (grad 1955) we hung out with our girls at Buttricks where they never allowed noise or crowds of kids. They sold all the signature ice cream products - usually at least 15 flavors, and good Sandwiches and burgers. Buttrick's was under pressure as a dairy during the 1950's. H. P. Hood and Son, seemed to have as real in with the retail milk driver's union and when higher wages led to higher retail delivery prices, people started buying milk at the grocery stores. This is also the era when the large 'super markets' began to crop up. Earlier Arlington had a First National and an A&P. The first super market was on Mass Ave at the foot of Highland Avenue. That's Buttricks during my life. The Buttrick family was highly respected, always very conscious of their responsibility for purity of product.
