It may not be possible to know exactly when it was first grown there. The sweet potato, Ipomoea batatas, was known and cultivated by the indigenous peoples of the Caribbean area and South America as early as 2,500 BC. It is likely that the people native to the North Carolina area probably knew of it not long after that, but since there are no accurate historical records, it may remain a mystery.
